-------------------------A note on failed projects – Another problematic issue that I encounter almost 100% of the time is the aesthetic failure. Most local contractors do not have the artistic ability to properly design a project so it it pleasing to the eye and fits into natural surroundings like it has always been there. This is why you see so many bodies of water that look like “just a hole in the ground.”

Building a lake is easy, right? Well, yes and no. Last summer, we were on a project in Central Texas that was on the same caliche road as a rather large commercial cattle operation. These folks were in the business to make money and they obviously held a hard bottom line. I noticed their stock tanks were all cookie cutter endeavors. Every single one of them looked like a 35 square yard postage stamp. They did the job all right I am sure. They served a utilitarian purpose in the most minimal fashion. I know they were easy to build-- no real expertise required to dig a square hole. I am sure they were cost effective and served the purpose but they sure were ugly. Our clients want more!

Just what does it take to add a lake? People here in the Southwest have a thing about water. Maybe it is because it is so arid or maybe it s because of a more rural lifestyle where farmers and ranchers are dependent on stock tanks. For whatever reasons, we love our farm ponds and recreational fishing lakes. Just to give you some perspective, Virginia has about 50,000 privately owned farm ponds and recreational fishing lakes while Texas has over 800,000!

A BAD Lake – It is hard to believe this project was completed over 10 years ago. I have consulted on 100’s of lake building projects since then. SoilMovers has also built its’ fair share of great lakes in the ensuing years and those past clients are quick to tell anyone who will listen what a great investment they made in capital improvements to their property. It saddens me when I am called out to consult or repair a failed project.
